History

During the early 1960's, tradesmen in Australia creatively applied small exposed aggregate finishes to pool decks. Applying exposed aggregate in swimming pool beach entries started next because craftsmen were not successful with marble sheen (Australia's name for plaster). Pebble surface beach entries became widely accepted and before long the entire pool was installed with smaller exposed aggregate. Over the next fifteen years, Australian interest in pebble interiors for swimming pools grew in popularity.

Al Brown, owner of Mutual Pools in Sydney, Australia, was later awarded a process patent for the exposed aggregate surfacing in the interior of swimming pools. Patents were issued in Australia, United States and Canada. In 1986 Les Mathews, the owner of Caretaker Systems, Inc., went to Australia and witnessed the exposed aggregate finish. Mr. Mathews purchased the patent for the United States and Canada from Mutual Pools. The name Pebble Tec® was developed and an Arizona based Corporation was started. During 1986-87 the application process was greatly improved, while resources for superior quality pebble materials were found. In 1988 the product was brought to market in Phoenix, AZ. In 1989 Australian investors purchased Pebble Technology, Inc. Since 1989 the product application process and materials have changed significantly. The finest pebbles and seashells are imported from around the world to create three beautiful and distinctively different product lines found in Pebble Tec, Pebble Sheen® and Pebble Fina® brand pool finishes.
